Project Goal 

This personal project explores the creation of a tileable procedural material with a painterly aesthetic, investigating how a fully procedural workflow can be used as an artistic tool rather than solely to recreate realistic surfaces.

The goal was to develop a material with its own visual identity, combining procedural variations in shape, color, and height to achieve a stylized and color-driven finish while maintaining a fully reusable and non-destructive system.

Why This Study?

Reference Analysis → Shape Design → Procedural Stone Generation → Artistic Color Development → Roughness & Height Refinement → Material Validation in Unreal Engine 

Production Notes 

The entire material was created exclusively in Substance Designer using a fully procedural workflow.

The stones were generated with procedural variations in shape, size, and spacing to avoid repetitive patterns, while color and wear variations were used to reinforce the material's hand-crafted character.

Although Base Color defines much of the material's visual identity, Roughness plays a fundamental role in the perception of volume and its response to lighting.

The Height map was designed with sufficient detail to be reused as a displacement source in future geometry generation workflows, including Nanite-ready assets for Unreal Engine.

Breakdown Material

The Base Color constitutes the material's main artistic resource, while the Roughness provides visual richness through its interaction with lighting.

The Height map not only defines the material's relief, but was also conceived as a reusable information source for displacement and geometry generation workflows in Unreal Engine via Nanite.


Final Result 

This study demonstrates how a completely procedural material can be used as an artistic exploration tool, combining a stylized aesthetic with a non-destructive and scalable workflow.

The combination of a carefully crafted Base Color, an expressive Roughness, and a reusable Height allows the material to function not only as a tileable texture, but also as a solid foundation for future geometry generation processes and real-time production.
